You don't need a Windows server. UNIX is fine.
You might need a host that supports Frontpage Extensions if you plan to use some features of Frontpage, but most people can get by without those features, and last time I checked they were available for UNIX and Windows systems.
Personally I would avoid Frontpage though. The quality of its output is generally rather low. Dreamweaver is better, but nothing is a good substitute for learning HTML and CSS.

I need your advice.. how much will the the following project cost? I have a list of things that we want:
1. web pages (around 5-8 pages) where around 150 people can key in some survey data
2. we can download/export the data to be analyzed (to MS excel)
3. we publish the analysis results online
4. our targeted audiences can view the results or export them to MS excel format
5. all the above users would need to have their own unique user name and password
I dont know whether our budget of around SGD 3,000 would be enough. Btw, I think we might need to pay for web-hosting??

Not to worry; while Unix is the preferred operating system on web servers themselves -for their own, internal operation and secure communications- virtually all hosting sites handle web sites developed with Microsoft products, FrontPage included, because it is so popular. That said, you'll want a site that has the "FrontPage extensions" available, as there are some particular FrontPage features that need this companion siftware on the server. Again, most provide it.
One of the best sites you can use is LunarPages, which will give you everything you need for about $100 a year; tons of bandwidth, a secure data center, fast servers and GREAT tech support. The address is:

And they'll give you your domain name FREE for life, long as you stay hosted with them.

Here's the deal: all the web authoring tools act as "application development software." That is, they give you an interface with more or less understandable tools -like word processing, page design, etc., that you already feel "comfortable" with. Then, they generate the actual html or javascript that makes up the operating web site. With FrontPage you can see BOTH what YOU are doing -and the code the program is creating.
No question about it, FrontPage sometimes uses way more code than is necessary to make something happen and this can make the code itself difficult to follow. But the other products have quirks of their own as well. For most, FrontPage is the most affordable way to create a functional site that does what you want it to. After you become an expert user, then, maybe look at Dreamweaver and the others.
Now go and make your web site and have a good time.

hi, i want to create and publish a web site with my chosen domain name, but i don't want to create it on freewebs or piczo or any other web hosting service sites. I want to create my own official site that has it's own personal domain name. And i want it to be COMPLETLEY FREE. Anyone know any sites?Please post links or any help you can give me. My advice to you is to just start out on a freeserver, hone your web design skills, and then when you can, (I am assuming you are a teenager, and therefore, can't purchase a domain.) you can purchase your own domain/hosting. Purchasing a domain is really easier than finding it for free, because free domains don't exist.

I just signed up for Yahoo! small business about a week ago. i recieved a confirmation e-mail saying that my web site was now actie. I try signing into the web hosting site and a unable to find whee the control panels are to be able to work on my site. I have searched everywher and everything that i read keps telling me that I should have a completely differrnt looking scren whenver I sign in. But I don't. Any thoughts s to what I might be dong wrong? This is frustrating!!

3. At the very top of the screen, there's a sign-in link, click it and sign into yahoo with your account and password that you subscribed to Yahoo Web Hosting with.
4. That should go immediately to your web hosting control panel. If it doesn't, you'll be in the genernic hosting web panel, your website's domain name will be there along with three links, click "Web Hosting Control Panel" and that will take you to where you need to be to create your website.
