In other words, if I register a new domain that I want to use in advertising, but I want people who type it in their browser to be REDIRECTED to another site that's already online, does the new domain need to be hosted, or is it enough that I have registered the domain? You don't need to host it since your are doing domain redirect.
Let say a.com is your new domain; b.com is the domain you already have.
Here are two method you can do now.
1. Domain Forwarding
e.g. Vistor type a.com, it forward them to b.com with url: b.com shows on the URL address.
2. Domain Masking
This one I will suggest more.
e..g. Vistor type a.com, it will user a.com to shows all b.com links. The URL address will still use a.com although all the stuff are from the b.com
Almost all Doamin registration company has that feature on their control panel, check that out.

I like google pages. It gives you a ton of space for free, but it doesn't incorperate html very well. It's ad free though. My second pick would be geocities. It only has some minor ads. (although annoying) It has a basic html editor and you can upload your already existing html pages easily. I would also advise you to go to www.dot.tk (if its still running) to get a free domain name (.tk) It might have one irritating add before you can enter your website, but i think it's worth it.
EDIT: other than my two choices? Well freewebs is ok, but it really sucks. I have never found anything reliable thats good out there. Maybe try dotster.com?

If you are willing to learn HTML I would suggest ATSPACE.COM. You can create a website for FREE up to 50MBs in size. I have two websites through them and the uptime is great. NO ADS, NO BANNERS. You'll need an ftp program to upload your stuff. There's a good free one for personal use called "FTP Explorer". I have registered a domain name and the site is under construction. have a hosting place now. i want to upload 3-4 test pages now untill i complete the correct site web pages. the actual site will be hosted in a different place in different IP address after about 1 months time. I want find out whether i will loose the traffic history, hit count and the ranking when i switch my hosting place to adifferent IP address after my site is completed.

If you can afford it then you are better off finding a host with an affordable product for you, websites are like eating peanuts.... you can't stop at one..... so it is best to set yourself up with an option for future growth. If you look at selling stuff further down the track you want a site with good stats tracking, the ability to ftp in to it when you want and to be free of free ads that free hostings have.
Many of these hosts also have templates and sitebuilders that will help with your first web site.
I know that you asked for free, but I have seen others burnt by free web hosts and having to change on a regular basis when they collapse.

Reply:At the end of the day you get what you pay for with web hosting. If you can afford it then you are better off finding a host with an affordable product for you, websites are like eating peanuts.... you can't stop at one..... so it is best to set yourself up with an option for future growth. If you look at selling stuff further down the track you want a site with good stats tracking, the ability to ftp in to it when you want and to be free of free ads that free hostings have.
Many of these hosts also have templates and sitebuilders that will help with your first web site.
I know that you asked for free, but I have seen others burnt by free web hosts and having to change on a regular basis when they collapse.

Web page question?
I have a web page, and I want to put some pictures on it. I figured out how to do it on frontpage, but when I put it on, it comes up with a little red X that I know means it's being censored by my computer. The image is a pic of a Harry Potter book. It is in an allowed format by bravnet (my host) and I have tried many times to get it right. How can I make it show up uncensored so I can see it when I go to the page? Do I need to do something with my browser, msn explorer? I use frontpage to make web pages, my page is hosted by bravenet, and I am using msn explorer to look at it, although I have the same problem with intranet explorer. Can anyone help?

Make sure that the image is in that folder called /images because from what I can tell, it is not. If its in the SAME directory as your index.html page, then make sure you get rid of the folder name /images. If you lead the img src path to the wrong place, then it will show that X because it cant find it.

When I update my web site on a USA located host, why does it take 24 hours for someone in Thailand to see it?
Sometimes the site updates immediately, but often takes 24 hours. I heard there may be a hub in Taiwan that may not get updated with the new info immediately. So someone in the USA will see the update immediately but someone surfing the web in Thailand only sees an old copy. This is not a case of the old web site being in the surfer's cache.

Hi. My host has 'lost' my web site has has not been able to find their backups for 2 weeks - can I sue them?
I run an ecommerve site and two weeks ago my host 'lost' my site - they are still not sure what has happened.
They can also not find any of their daily backups of the site.
So far I would estimaet I have lost about $8,000.00 in sales. not to mention my entire customer database.
Can I sue them for lost revenue - does anyone know a law firm that would handle this type of case?

but then how are these spaces created in the first place? where do they come from and where are they? who makes them? how do they look?

How is the disk space made in the first place (for web sites) ?
Every web space provider has in their posession (or somewhere nearby) masses and masses of computers. These are not set up like yours and mine for surfing and gaming, but are simply there to hold peoples websites. When someone wants a website they pay the provider either for a domain name (the www.mysite.co.uk) part and some file hosting space (250MB, 1GB etc).
All of the files for your website are on these servers, alongside other peoples sites. Don't worry though, only you can access it (via your special login details when you buy the webspace).

They are hard disks on servers. Servers are fast computers that can be easily chained together.
Storage is large arrays of hard disks, plates with fine magnetic material on both sides. These can hold ones and zeros in the forms of a tiny spot being magnetic or not, or being magnetized in different directions.
The finer the mag. material and the smoother the disk surface, the more storage per sq.in is possible.

Every web space provider has in their posession (or somewhere nearby) masses and masses of computers. These are not set up like yours and mine for surfing and gaming, but are simply there to hold peoples websites. When someone wants a website they pay the provider either for a domain name (the www.mysite.co.uk) part and some file hosting space (250MB, 1GB etc).
All of the files for your website are on these servers, alongside other peoples sites. Don't worry though, only you can access it (via your special login details when you buy the webspace).

I would like to able to set up a web-site about some social activities without too much grief. If the course would also include a low cost host for the completed web so much the better.

How can I create an ActiveX object with an IE instance inside of a web page?
Yes, it sounds weird, but I want to create an ActiveX object inside of a webpage that can host an IE session. The reason for this is we are creating a web application that will contain two other web apps inside iFrames. The problem with this is that if those web apps are loaded in the same IE session, one of them will not work. (It's a limitation of the web app, and we don't have control over it.)
We could always modify the app so that one of them runs in another browser window (this will work), but it isn't ideal. The purpose of the app we creating is that it is a single view portal that makes navigation easier.
The only possible solution we've come up with so far is to host one of the web apps inside an ActiveX object and hope that it uses a new browser session. That will keep the instances separate, and allow them both to work (in theory). So, basically, I'm trying to find the code to create an ActiveX browser session inside another browser.

Database Server or Web Server?
I have 2 servers which I would like to host a website. One is brand new with quad core xeons the other is p3. I was wondering which role will use more processing power and which one I should use as the webserver and which one should be the database server.
I guess its kind of a dumb question...
I need database access to have pretty high latency and be able to handle a high number of transactions and search a pretty big database (1mil items). I will probably host images elsewhere so web transactions will pretty mugh just be data dependent. Any input?

Usually a general rule of thumb is that your database server needs to have more power than your web server. Your web server is usually just grabbing files and sending them. That is usually a simple task for a computer.
You can host your web site at home your isp should not say much because they can monitor your bandwidth and limit it if needed. They do not say anything about torrent uploads and downloads and it is almost the same thing.
Only reason you should not host at home is if 1. you dont know how or 2 you need bandwidth that you can not afford to bring 2 your house.

Good luck looking for one...most hosts, as you said, only offer a "piece of the puzzle". My host gave me a free domain for the duration of my hosting plan though, which was reasonably priced. You may be able to get a donated domain if you look hard enough-free domain hosting isn't too hard to find either. If you do stumble upon a completely free host, be sure to tell me ;)

How do web servers allocate data for multiple hosts?
When a website is hosted as part of a webhosting package, all the files associated with that website are under a directory on a HD in the server. Am I correct so far? So, if I hosted another website, under the same package, my hosting company give me another directory (which I assume is on the same HD?) as part of the new website. Now, when information is requested from both websites at the same time, doesn't that mean that the server needs to load information from both sub-directories at the same time? So if 100 people access information from one website at the same time as 100 people access the other website, wouldn't it be faster to have the other website hosted somewhere else entirely??? Please explain how mulitple hosted sites on single hosting packages work (in terms of storage on server and data transfer) and is it better to host each separately? Thx in advance.

With most hosts you should be able to access your sites content with the admin ID and password via ftp.
Open a browser and type in ftp://www.yourdomainname.com and you should be prompted for ID and password. Once entered you should see the contents of the site and be able to manage them. If you are using dreamweaver or such you can establish the ftp connection from within the application and make the changes directly. I do not recommend this, I would rather have a local copy that I make the changes to, then upload any modified pages as the changes are made.
Reply:Most hosts give you adminsitrative access over your site. Most allow you to use third part FTP programs to upload your web content. There's also typcially a web-based FTP application provided by the host as well to allow you to upload your files.
You should have a login to your account on the web host which will give you the access you need to your site content.

I have an adult web site and a host. Now, I need to start building the site. Where do I start?
With most hosts you should be able to access your sites content with the admin ID and password via ftp.
Open a browser and type in ftp://www.yourdomainname.com and you should be prompted for ID and password. Once entered you should see the contents of the site and be able to manage them. If you are using dreamweaver or such you can establish the ftp connection from within the application and make the changes directly. I do not recommend this, I would rather have a local copy that I make the changes to, then upload any modified pages as the changes are made.
Reply:Most hosts give you adminsitrative access over your site. Most allow you to use third part FTP programs to upload your web content. There's also typcially a web-based FTP application provided by the host as well to allow you to upload your files.
You should have a login to your account on the web host which will give you the access you need to your site content.

How do i get my own DNS so I can host my own web site instead of paying someone else? Thanks.?
Before setting up your DNS, make sure you have a server.
The apache server is a good free option.
http://httpd.apache.org/
*note that you don't have to have a DNS to check if your site works after the server is ready. just type http://localhost in explorer on the server computer.
to set up your own DNS, check a site that offers DNS redirection. What such a site does, is to convert your computer IP address to http. from 175.964.65.65 to www.mysite.com. (or, in short, providing you with a DNS)
most sites will do that for a fee (yahoo?), other sites offer free DNS for several limited domain names (it means the last part of your address is limited to say, http://YourSite.servebeer.com)

a trick you can use to have your "pretty" html adress is URL cloaking. This basically put a mask on the address in the explorer address bar, so that the user thinks he's at one address, while he's actually is the "ugly" free domain name you got.

if you are using a router, you'll have to define a forwarding on your router, so that it will send all the information coming into port 80, to the computer where your webserver is on. check your router help documentation for that. (oh, and if your router uses dynamic routing - that's bad... cause the IP of your server will change every time you restart)
In general, NTFS file system is more secure... so if your computer runs of FAT32 file system - you might want to reformat (it's another complicated story though). and, Of course, make sure you have a good anti-virus.

WIthout sounding obvious, it's myspace. My space seems to be a replacement for websites these days, and it's free and you don't have to put any design on, you also can do a good job of networking on there....although obviously there are a billion dj's everywhere trying to make it and spamming people with their mixes etc. Best way to make it? Play out as much as poss and network in person.
